INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

STRUCTURE AND DIVERSITY INCORAL REEFS
AUGUST 3- AUGUST 19

Program Overview:
The internship program aims to pro-vide important insight into regional and global catastrophic decline of coral reefs. Studies of the effect of marine protected areas on reef sustainability is the focus of the intern-ship. Research by participants issued in evaluating the current status of the reef and in assisting in the effective management and conservation of the reefs around Little Cayman Island, one of the most remote and well developed reefs in the Caribbean.

The internship program provides advanced research opportunities for students who already have prior field research. This is a highly selective program. To ensure the best training possible during the research internship, only a maximum of 12students will be able to participate at a time. Students will collect data to be used on a large on-going study of the coral reef ecosystems of the Little Cayman. Eligibility: The internship is open to students with prior field research experience. All students who wish to enroll must first complete the on-line registration form and submit all required documents considered for this pro-gram. See our website for more informationhttp://reefresearch.org. Students will be required to have their own snorkel and SCUBA gear(if diving). SCUBA gear is available for rental.

SUMMER CARIBBEAN CORAL REEF FIELD STUDIES AT LITTLE CAYMAN ISLAND

Check the CCMI Website for additional information, http://reefresearch.org.

INSTITUTE OF MARINE ANDCOASTAL SCIENCES
Come and discover nature’s most exotic under sea environment at the new Little Cayman Research Centre.By enrolling in the Caribbean Coral Reef Field Studies course, you will be able to explore the emerald sea that lies around Little Cayman. This small, remote tropical island Nissan excellent example of a small developing island nation where the local human population is less than150. Little Cayman is consistently ranked as the best diving destination in the Caribbean because of the stunning reef walls, shallow reef structures, and large undersea life. The island has a healthy bird population with the largest breeding colony of Red Footed Boobies, competing Frigate birds and the endangered West Indian Whistling duck. The endemic Little Cayman iguana which grows to 4 feet long can be seen basking in the sun in the late afternoons or running down a dirt road. With one of the last spawning aggregations of the Nassau grouper and common sea turtles including hawksbills and green turtles, this location is a fantastic study site. The Coral Reefs college program is now located at the newest field station facility in the region and will introduce undergraduate and graduate students and teachers to some of the most spectacular coral reef in the world. The Internship Program is for advanced students and involves students in different aspects of our on going reef research and monitoring program on the structure and diversity in coral reefs. The Coral Reef Field Studies program at Rutgers is coordinated through the Central Caribbean Marine Institute; please visit their website for more information at http://reefresearch.org.
